ABOUT US

OUR STORY

In the quiet gullies of Keswick, Cumbria, there once lived a cat who believed the valley belonged to him. Alf was his name scarred, sharp-eyed, and utterly fearless. He ruled the stone paths and shadowed corners like a king with no crown, slipping between dry stone walls and rooftops, always coming home with the look of a bad boy who'd won another day. Everyone knew Alf. Not because he was gentle, but because he was unforgettable.

Alf's true place, though, was beside Tom Harding, his human and lifelong companion. Wherever Tom went, Alf followed most often perched proudly atop a bicycle, paws tucked in, tail flicking like he was steering the ride himself. They were inseparable: man and cat, grease and gravel, early mornings and long rides. Alf wasn't just company; he was constant. A quiet presence during repairs, a watchful spirit in the shop, a reminder that belonging isn't about ownership—it's about choosing to stay.

Tom had started fixing bikes in a small garage on Station Street back in 1987. It wasn't much just a workbench, a few tools, and a hand painted sign that read "Harding's Repairs." But word spread quickly. Tom didn't just fix bikes; he understood them. He knew when a frame was salvageable and when it wasn't, when a customer needed advice more than a sale, and when silence was better than small talk. Cyclists came from all over the Lakes, not just for the repairs, but for the honesty.

And Alf? He became part of the ritual. Customers would arrive to find him lounging on the counter, or stretched across a saddle like he owned it. Some brought treats. Others simply nodded in respect. He had a way of making people feel like they'd been chosen to visit, rather than the other way around. Tom often joked that Alf was better at customer service than he ever was—no scripts, no pretense, just presence.

Years passed. The garage became a shop. The shop became a fixture. Tom's daughter, Sarah, joined the business after university, bringing fresh ideas but the same old values. More mechanics came on board riders themselves, people who knew the sting of a puncture at the top of Honister Pass, the satisfaction of a perfectly tuned derailleur. The team grew slowly, carefully, each person vetted not just for skill but for spirit. Because this wasn't just a bike shop. It was a place built on trust.

When Alf was gone, the silence he left behind was too big to ignore. The counter felt empty. The rides felt lighter in the wrong way. But Tom did the only thing that made sense he built something that would last. He renamed the shop in Alf's honor, not as a memorial, but as a continuation. This place stands in memory of a cat who chose loyalty over comfort, who sat through countless repairs without complaint, who reminded everyone that the best things in life aren't owned—they're earned through showing up, day after day.

Every bike worked on here carries a little of that story forward. Every spoke tightened, every chain cleaned, every conversation over the counter. And if you look closely really closely you might still imagine Alf there, sitting tall on a saddle, one paw stretched out, ruling the place like he always did. Because some spirits don't leave. They just become part of the walls, the tools, the rhythm of the work. And that's exactly how Tom wanted it.

WHAT MAKES US
DIFFERENT

We're cyclists first, shopkeepers second. Every member of our team rides regularly from road racing to mountain biking, from casual commutes to multi day tours. That means we understand what you need because we need it too. We've been caught in sudden downpours on Whinlatter, fought headwinds along Bassenthwaite, celebrated summits, and cursed punctures. We don't just sell bikes. We live them.

We keep our prices fair and our service personal. If a repair isn't worth doing, we'll tell you. If a cheaper bike suits you better than an expensive one, we'll say so. We've never chased a sale at the expense of a relationship, and we've never pretended something needs fixing when it doesn't. This business was built on reputation, not hard sells, and that's a tradition we guard fiercely. Tom taught us that trust is earned in small moments when you tell someone the truth, even if it costs you money.

We're part of the community. We support local cycling clubs, sponsor youth riders, and help maintain trail access in the area. When the bridleway near Latrigg needed clearing, we were there with tools and time. When a local kid wanted to start racing but couldn't afford a bike, we found one. We believe in giving back to the roads and trails that have given us so much. When you shop with us, you're not just supporting a business you're investing in the local cycling culture that makes this place special.

Most importantly, we remember where we came from. From a single cat, single man operation in a cramped garage to a full shop with a loyal team, we've grown without forgetting what mattered from the start: do good work, treat people right, and let the rest take care of itself. Alf would've approved. And every day we open the doors, that's the standard we're trying to meet.
